This new ‘TOP TIP’ series is to help parents to continue to develop speech and drama skills at home. In a recent ‘Ask Me Anything’ event the main theme that emerged was how to help and encourage students to gain skills outside of lessons. So here we are, with top tip number one… As a LAMDA tutor and examiner the biggest skill that I find students benefit from when studying LAMDA is the development of ideas and opinions. There is nothing more fulfilling than working with a student that is passionate about their chosen speech subject. But, sometimes it can be hard for students to find topics that they are interested in. We live on a huge planet filled with an incredible array of curiosities! But it can be hard to interact with new and exciting hobbies/interests other than the average football, swimming and school. Develop new interests by using this game. Use a random topic generator like Randomquestionmaker.com and challenge each other to talk for 60 secs about that topic/question. Make sure to countdown once the player is getting down to the end of their time in true ‘Countdown’ style and make sure to join in the fun by sharing your own ideas, stories and opinions as you begin setting an example and creating a connection. Children love to know your likes and dislikes too! Specifically for LAMDA students this exercise helps to build skills for the Grades 4 and 5 conversation sections. In this section of the exam the examiner provides a topic or question and the student is expected to have a conversation revolving around this topic. Furthermore, as we progress through the grades, at Grade 6 and above, students are expected to prepare in 15 minutes an impromptu (unrehearsed) speech on a given topic. Have fun and let us know what you discover through any of our channels below!
