At Grade 8 Speaking in Public, students are asked to discuss a range of different speech styincluding political, informative, persuasive, vote of thanks and finally humorous.
Here’s our description of a humorous speech: The objective of a humorous speech is to entertain the audience while leading them on a journey to make a point. Humour relies on skilled delivery and intelligent wit. The speech must have an underlying purpose/message or it will lack impact. Humour works well when it is relevant to the audience and based on experiences they can relate to. A humorous speech is very much focused on delivery – the use of pause to deliver punch lines, an animated and often larger than life delivery – some may even use large over exaggerated movement and gesture to better animate their point. Facial expression also becomes more important to utilise when delivering a humorous speech. A fantastic example of a humorous speech is by Shawn Achor. His ‘The Happy Secret to Better Work’ speech includes a personal anecdote which endears the audience and encourages us to continue listening.
