At Grade 8 Speaking in Public, students are asked to discuss a range of different speech styincluding political, informative, persuasive, vote of thanks and finally humorous.
Here’s our description of a humorous speech: The objective of a humorous speech is to entertain the audience while leading them on a journey to make a point. Humour relies on skilled delivery and intelligent wit. The speech must have an underlying purpose/message or it will lack impact. Humour works well when it is relevant to the audience and based on experiences they can relate to. A humorous speech is very much focused on delivery – the use of pause to deliver punch lines, an animated and often larger than life delivery – some may even use large over exaggerated movement and gesture to better animate their point. Facial expression also becomes more important to utilise when delivering a humorous speech. A fantastic example of a humorous speech is by Shawn Achor. His ‘The Happy Secret to Better Work’ speech includes a personal anecdote which endears the audience and encourages us to continue listening.

Congratulations to the entire London LAMDA Studio community on this remarkable achievement! 📆 https://www.londonlamdastudio.co.uk/book.html 📸 https://www.Instagram.com/londonlamdastudio In March ‘23 I was so lucky to receive a fully funded place at Moulton College to further study mental health specifically for Children and Young People which adds to my certificate in Psychological First Aid for Children and Young People. I learnt about children’s rights and legislation to support and protect children from mental health concerns; risk factors- what makes a child more vulnerable to experiencing a mental health concern; the daily effects of different mental health concerns prevalent in children and young people and how to promote a safe environment for vulnerable children. This is my second qualification as I'm really passionate about understanding the needs of our students and providing a safe space for them to be creative. I’m certainly no expert! But we strive to be considerate towards all of our students facing post-pandemic changes, exam stress, and pesky hormones! 📆 https://www.londonlamdastudio.co.uk/book.html
📸 https://www.Instagram.com/londonlamdastudio This new ‘TOP TIP’ series is to help parents to continue to develop speech and drama skills at home. In a recent ‘Ask Me Anything’ event the main theme that emerged was how to help and encourage students to gain skills outside of lessons. So here we are, with top tip number one… As a LAMDA tutor and examiner the biggest skill that I find students benefit from when studying LAMDA is the development of ideas and opinions. There is nothing more fulfilling than working with a student that is passionate about their chosen speech subject. But, sometimes it can be hard for students to find topics that they are interested in. We live on a huge planet filled with an incredible array of curiosities! But it can be hard to interact with new and exciting hobbies/interests other than the average football, swimming and school. Develop new interests by using this game. Use a random topic generator like Randomquestionmaker.com and challenge each other to talk for 60 secs about that topic/question. Make sure to countdown once the player is getting down to the end of their time in true ‘Countdown’ style and make sure to join in the fun by sharing your own ideas, stories and opinions as you begin setting an example and creating a connection. Children love to know your likes and dislikes too! Specifically for LAMDA students this exercise helps to build skills for the Grades 4 and 5 conversation sections. In this section of the exam the examiner provides a topic or question and the student is expected to have a conversation revolving around this topic. Furthermore, as we progress through the grades, at Grade 6 and above, students are expected to prepare in 15 minutes an impromptu (unrehearsed) speech on a given topic. Have fun and let us know what you discover through any of our channels below! Poetry4Kids is a website anthology owned by children's poet Ken Nesbitt. Ken Nesbitt's poems appear throughout the LAMDA Anthology and are always comedic and prove to be a very popular choice amongst LAMDA students. For parents this website is a fantastic resource for inspiring children to read (and enjoy!) poetry, they learn that poetry can be fun, relatable and not 'boring'. For my fellow LAMDA tutors this website's poetry is suitable for all the own choice verse pieces for Stage 1, Grades 1, 2 and 3. 📆 https://www.londonlamdastudio.co.uk/book.html
📸 https://www.Instagram.com/londonlamdastudio Episode Three of the SpeakUp ED podcast produced by the London LAMDA Studio was presented by alumni Hanash, who shares his views on the subject of Cancel Culture. Below is an excerpt from his Podcast: SPEAKUP ED PODCAST: EPISODE THREE Georgina: Welcome to SpeakUp Ed by the London Lambda Studio. Listen to students share their ideas on the world's greatest contemporary issues. Today's featured talk is from Hannash, discussing Cancel Culture. Hanash: Hello, my name is Hanash and today the topic I will be discussing is cancel culture. Firstly, I will look at what it is. Secondly, I will look at both how it has been used for, good, and for bad. And finally, I will give you my opinion on the question is cancel culture, right? Or is it wrong? 'Canceling out' is the act of finding something someone has done or said in the past or present, and for that withdrawing support. By highlighting what they have done, reducing their social standing, and at times destroying careers, it is normally done to people who have high social standing, wealth or power, for example, celebrities, influencers, or politicians... 📆 https://www.londonlamdastudio.co.uk/book.html

Below is an excerpt from her Podcast: SPEAKUP ED PODCAST: EPISODE TWO Georgina: Welcome to Speak Up Ed by the London LAMDA Studio. Listen to students share their ideas on the world's greatest contemporary issues. Today's featured talk is from Akshita, talking about the gender pay gap. Akshita: Hello everyone. I'm Akshita and I thank you very much for having me on this podcast to present to you my speech on the gender pay gap and for taking time out of your day to listen to my speech. The topics I will cover in today's speech are what is the gender pay gap; why it exists; details on the gender pay gap in each industry and the best ways to combat this issue. The public claim that all genders are treated fairly. However, if this is the case, why does the gender pay gap still exist? The gender pay gap is the difference in pay between the two genders. This has been a long-term issue for the past century and is something that is limiting the confidence of female workers across the world. In almost every company, females earnt a stunning 8.9% less than men. Women have been allowed in the workforce ever since the mid-19th century due to social and economic development. The main reason for this difference in pay is that employers naturally assume that men are the main providers, for the family rather than women. Furthermore, at that period of time when women first started working, women who worked were mainly single and unmarried. Hence, they were paid lower wages. This is something that is still an issue in the working environment today. Many working women tend to opt for jobs that are more convenient to their tasks and duties as mothers... 📆 https://www.londonlamdastudio.co.uk/book.html

It was a stressful and confusing time for all and as we returned back to ‘normality’ I saw the need to make sure students were getting the support they needed.
As both a tutor and examiner I continue to see the need for more mental health awareness for our children and young people and hope that the London LAMDA Studio can continue to be safe space in which our students feel they are able to develop the necessary life skills (confidence and communication) to continue to thrive as young adults.
